Bayelsa Opposition Urges Focus on Governance Delivery

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged Governor Douye Diri to place stronger emphasis on governance delivery, warning that increasing political engagements could distract from addressing pressing development needs in the state.

The party said on Wednesday in Yenagoa that residents were more concerned about tangible improvements in infrastructure, public services and economic opportunities than political positioning ahead of future elections.

Speaking through its state chairman, Dauprebo Ikuromo, the NDC said leadership must remain responsive to the everyday needs of citizens, adding that the core duty of government should not be diluted by political activities.

He cautioned that when attention shifts excessively to politics, critical areas of development risk being neglected, stressing the need for sustained focus on policies that directly improve living conditions.

Ikuromo also urged the state government to prioritise key infrastructure projects, including concerns over gas turbines in the state that he said remain non-operational despite being completed.

He argued that such facilities are essential to improving power supply and stimulating economic activity.

The opposition further noted that resources and energy devoted to political consolidation should instead be directed toward resolving such developmental challenges.

He also disclosed that the party was strengthening its internal structures to ensure unity and better coordination ahead of future elections, saying mechanisms had been put in place to manage grievances and maintain cohesion.

According to him, the party’s national leadership would soon release guidelines and candidate lists for upcoming polls in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Commending the conduct of recent party primaries, Ikuromo described the process as transparent and inclusive, particularly in relation to youth and women participation.

He urged members across Bayelsa to remain focused and united, reaffirming the party’s ambition to provide an alternative leadership direction in the state while insisting that governance outcomes must remain the priority of those in office.
