Akume Condemns MACBAN Chairman Killing, Orders Security Probe

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has condemned the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku, and his associate, describing the incident as a serious setback to peace efforts in Benue State.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Akume said he was shocked and outraged by the attack, calling on security agencies to immediately launch a full-scale investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

He described the killings as a “direct assault” on ongoing reconciliation efforts among communities in the state, warning that criminal elements must not be allowed to undermine fragile peace.

“This dastardly act is reprehensible, unacceptable and a direct assault on the peace, reconciliation and mutual trust that communities across Benue State have worked painstakingly to rebuild,” he said.

Akume noted that the incident occurred at a time when Benue State was beginning to record improvements in security and gradual restoration of peaceful coexistence among its diverse communities.

He urged residents not to respond with violence, stressing that reprisals would only worsen tensions and reverse gains made in restoring stability.

“No individual or group should take the law into their hands. Lasting peace remains the strongest foundation for attracting investment, expanding agriculture, creating jobs and guaranteeing a better future for all citizens,” he warned.

The SGF directed the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to carry out a comprehensive, transparent and urgent investigation into the killings.

He insisted that no effort should be spared in identifying, arresting and prosecuting all those involved.

Akume also recalled his earlier call for justice following the Yelwata killings, noting that suspects in that case had already been arrested and were standing trial, adding that the same resolve must be applied in the current incident.

He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling insecurity nationwide, saying the Federal Government continues to support security agencies with resources and strategic direction to confront criminality.

The SGF extended condolences to the family of the deceased MACBAN chairman, members of the association, and all those affected by the attack, while urging continued cooperation with security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the state.
