Canada Stuns South Africa to Reach Last 16

Canada secured a historic place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa in their Round of 32 clash on Sunday.

The victory marks Canada’s first-ever qualification for the World Cup Round of 16, while South Africa’s impressive campaign came to a heartbreaking end after they looked set to force the match into extra time.

Both teams were making their maiden appearances in the World Cup knockout stage, producing a tightly contested encounter at the Los Angeles Stadium.

Canada dominated possession and created the better chances, but South Africa’s disciplined defending and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams repeatedly frustrated the co-hosts.

Canada came close to breaking the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Stephen Eustaquio delivered an inviting free-kick to Derek Cornelius, whose free header from close range went off target.

South Africa relied mainly on counter-attacks and remained compact defensively, while Williams produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest.

Shortly before half-time, Moise Bombito’s header from a corner was cleared off the goal line before Williams denied Tajon Buchanan with another crucial stop.

Canada’s appeals for a penalty following a challenge on Richie Laryea were also waved away by the referee.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Canada pressing for the breakthrough.

Substitute Niko Sigur combined with Tani Oluwaseyi, whose effort was brilliantly saved by Williams before defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared the danger ahead of Jonathan David.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch eventually introduced star full-back Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute after the Bayern Munich player recovered from a hamstring injury.

Davies immediately added pace and creativity to Canada’s attack, creating chances for Jonathan David and Promise David, but South Africa continued to hold firm.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Jacob Shaffelburg surged down the right flank in the second minute of stoppage time and delivered a cross that was only partially cleared.

The loose ball fell kindly to Eustaquio, who controlled it with his chest before firing a first-time strike into the bottom corner to spark wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.

Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 in Houston on July 4 as they continue their best-ever World Cup campaign, while South Africa bow out after an impressive tournament that saw them reach the knockout stage for the first time.
