Martinelli Late Winner Sends Brazil Past Japan

Brazil national football team survived a major scare to defeat Japan national football team 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after a dramatic stoppage-time finish in Houston.
Japan shocked the five-time world champions in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano struck from distance to give the Asian side a deserved lead, silencing Brazilian supporters and putting Brazil under pressure early in the knockout tie.
Brazil, led by head coach Carlo Ancelotti, struggled to break down Japan’s disciplined defensive structure for long spells, despite dominating possession and territory throughout the match.
The South Americans eventually drew level shortly after the restart when Casemiro rose highest to head in a Gabriel Magalhães cross, restoring balance to a tense contest.
As the game appeared to be heading toward extra time, Brazil found a late breakthrough in the 96th minute through Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly finished a decisive move to seal victory in injury time.
Japan continued to threaten on the counterattack but were ultimately unable to find a second goal, as Brazil held on to complete a hard-fought comeback.
Brazil now advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner between Ivory Coast national football team and Norway national football team, while Japan exit the tournament after a strong and competitive campaign.
