Edo Assembly Passes Agriculture, Science College Bill

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing the Edo State College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, a move aimed at strengthening agricultural education and expanding technical capacity in the state.

The bill repealed the existing 2019 law that created the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, replacing it with a broader institution that integrates agriculture, science, and technology under a unified academic framework designed to improve research, innovation, and workforce development.

The lawmakers approved the legislation after a detailed clause-by-clause consideration, with key provisions covering the institution’s governance structure, academic administration, financial management systems, and the official commencement arrangements for the college.

They also adopted amendments to ensure that all necessary schedules were properly attached to the bill, a step lawmakers said would ensure smooth implementation once the law is signed.

During plenary, the House received a formal request from Governor Monday Okpebholo, seeking the confirmation of a commissioner-designate.

The request was subsequently referred to a House Standing Committee for screening, with a directive to report back within two weeks.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, expressed sympathy over the impact of recent heavy rainfall in parts of the state, noting that several homes were destroyed and properties worth millions of naira were affected.

He assured victims that the government would provide necessary support and relief.

The Speaker also extended condolences to families affected by the flooding incidents, including reported fatalities, urging continued vigilance and improved disaster preparedness across the state.

The House later adjourned its sitting until the next legislative date, as preparations continue for the implementation of the newly approved education-focused initiative, which lawmakers said would help position Edo State as a hub for agricultural and scientific training in the region.
