World Cup Joy Turns Deadly in Mexico City

 

Celebrations in Mexico City following a 2–0 victory over Ecuador turned tragic on Tuesday after three people died from suffocation in massive crowds that gathered across the capital.

The victims included a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man.

They were among more than one million fans who flooded major streets, particularly around the Angel of Independence monument, to celebrate Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986.

City health authorities said emergency responders attended to three unconscious individuals at separate points along Paseo de la Reforma.

Paramedics performed CPR and first aid before rushing them to hospital, where all three were confirmed dead.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support, while urging residents to celebrate future victories with caution and responsibility.

The celebrations, which spread across the capital including the Estadio Azteca, featured fireworks and large street gatherings that continued long after the final whistle.

Authorities had earlier warned fans to avoid overcrowded areas due to expected congestion.

The victory secured Mexico a place in the Round of 16 of the tournament, where they are expected to face England if the European side advances past DR Congo.
