Spain cruise into World Cup last 16

European champions Spain delivered a commanding performance to defeat Austria 3-0 and book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining their status as one of the tournament’s strongest title contenders.

Playing before a packed crowd at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Spain dominated possession from start to finish, creating numerous scoring opportunities while keeping Austria from registering any meaningful attacking threat.

Mikel Oyarzabal starred with two goals, while defender Pedro Porro added his first international goal as Spain comfortably outclassed their opponents to secure a deserved victory.

Spain thought they had taken an early lead when Marc Cucurella found the net from a Lamine Yamal corner, but the effort was ruled out after Pau Cubarsí was adjudged to have impeded the Austrian goalkeeper.

Despite the setback, Spain continued to pile on the pressure. Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager produced several impressive saves to keep his side in the contest, including a fine stop to deny Oyarzabal.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute when Pedri released Cucurella down the left flank.

The defender delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Oyarzabal calmly guided the ball past the goalkeeper to give Spain a deserved lead before halftime.

Spain maintained complete control after the break, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal repeatedly causing problems for Austria’s defence.

Alex Baena came close to doubling the advantage when his free kick struck the crossbar, while Yamal was also denied by another excellent save from Schlager.

Austria attempted to respond by introducing experienced forwards Sasa Kalajdzic and Marko Arnautovic, but Spain’s organised defence comfortably dealt with the aerial threat.

The second goal arrived in the 66th minute as Baena floated a cross into the box for Pedro Porro, who rose highest to head home and effectively end Austria’s hopes of a comeback.

Spain continued to dominate the closing stages, drawing loud chants of “Olé” from supporters as they confidently passed the ball around the pitch.

Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute, meeting another pinpoint delivery from Cucurella to seal an emphatic 3-0 victory.

The win could have been by an even greater margin, with Spain also hitting the woodwork and seeing another effort ruled out during a one-sided contest.

The victory sends Spain into the Round of 16, where they are set to face neighbouring rivals Portugal in one of the tournament’s most anticipated knockout fixtures after Cristiano Ronaldo’s side edged Croatia 2-1 in a dramatic encounter.

Having recovered from a goalless opening match against Cape Verde, Spain have steadily gathered momentum and now head into the knockout stages looking every inch a team capable of challenging for a second consecutive major international title.
