Switzerland defeat Algeria 2-0, reach last 16

Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday, delivering a composed performance that ended the North Africans’ campaign.
The Swiss side took control of the match in Vancouver, opening the scoring through Breel Embolo, who converted from close range after a sharp run and precise assist from Johan Manzambi down the left flank.
Barely a minute into the second half, Switzerland doubled their advantage.
Dan Ndoye reacted quickest inside the box, capitalising on a loose clearance before firing a low strike through a crowded area, leaving the Algerian defence exposed and goalkeeper Luca Zidane unable to respond effectively.
Despite brief spells of pressure, Algeria struggled to break through Switzerland’s organised defensive setup and lacked cutting edge in the final third.
Their exit also marks another disappointing moment for African teams in the tournament, with only Morocco still remaining after early eliminations for several sides, including Senegal, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, and South Africa.
Switzerland now advance to face the winner of the clash between Colombia and Ghana in the next round, as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
