Nigeria evacuates 801 citizens from South Africa

The Federal Government has completed the evacuation of 801 Nigerian nationals from South Africa following renewed xenophobic tensions in parts of the country, with three humanitarian flights operated by Air Peace.

The final batch of returnees, numbering 268 passengers, arrived in Nigeria on Friday aboard a Boeing 777-200 aircraft, marking the completion of the third and final evacuation mission coordinated under a voluntary repatriation programme.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with Air Peace, which confirmed that the evacuation flights were conducted in partnership with the Federal Government to ensure the safe return of affected citizens.

Earlier flights brought back 262 Nigerians on June 11 and 271 on June 30, bringing the total number of evacuees to 801 within the coordinated exercise.

The airline described the missions as part of its humanitarian response capacity, noting that it has continued to support government-led efforts in crisis situations involving Nigerians abroad.

Air Peace said the successful completion of the operation reflects its commitment to national service and its readiness to assist in emergency evacuations when required.

It also highlighted its broader track record, stating that it has carried out multiple humanitarian and evacuation missions across Africa and other regions since beginning operations.

The airline reaffirmed its support for national priorities, stressing that it remains committed to providing safe passage for Nigerians in distress and responding promptly to government requests during international crises.
