Nigeria secure winning start against Rwanda

Team Nigeria has made a winning start to its campaign at the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III in Botswana, defeating Rwanda 2-1 in their opening tie to strengthen their hopes of earning promotion to World Group II.
The Billie Jean King Cup, widely regarded as the Women’s World Cup of Tennis, has brought together 12 African nations competing for two promotion spots to World Group II, making every tie crucial in the qualification race.
Nigeria’s squad features four of the country’s brightest female tennis talents: Barakat Oyinlomo Quadre, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed, and Etoro Bassey.
Notably, all four players are products of the DavNotch National Open Tennis Championship, highlighting the tournament’s growing impact in identifying and developing elite Nigerian tennis players.
The hard-fought victory over Rwanda showcased the quality, resilience, and determination within the Nigerian team as they continue their pursuit of a return to a higher level of international women’s team tennis.
Buoyed by their opening-day success, Team Nigeria will now turn their attention to their remaining group matches, aware that only the top two nations at the tournament will secure promotion to World Group II.
The impressive start further underlines the rising profile of Nigerian women’s tennis and the impact of grassroots development programmes in producing players capable of competing successfully on the continental stage.
Tennis stakeholders and fans across the country will be hoping the team maintains its momentum and clinches one of the available promotion spots, delivering another landmark achievement for Nigeria in African tennis.
