Police nab Adeyemi over fake presidential council

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Adeniyi Adeyemi, who allegedly presented himself as the Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), in a case involving allegations of forgery, fraud and impersonation.
Police spokesperson Okokon Iniedu confirmed that operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) apprehended Adeyemi in Osun State.
The arrest followed an order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja after the suspect failed to appear for his scheduled arraignment.
Justice Umar had granted a bench warrant upon an application by the prosecution, directing security agencies to arrest Adeyemi and produce him before the court to answer criminal charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
Court documents show that Adeyemi is facing an eight-count charge bordering on alleged forgery of official government documents, impersonation and obtaining advantages through false representation.
Prosecutors accused him of forging an appointment letter purportedly issued by President Bola Tinubu and allegedly signed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
He is also accused of producing fake State House letterheads and official correspondence allegedly used to seek government collaboration, acquire office accommodation and request land across the 36 states of the federation under the name of the purported presidential council.
Investigators further alleged that Adeyemi falsely claimed to be the head of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an organisation the Presidency has insisted does not exist.
The controversy gained national attention after photographs of Adeyemi with prominent public figures surfaced on social media, creating the impression that he occupied an official government position.
Before his arrest, Adeyemi maintained that he would defend himself in court, insisting the council was legitimate because it allegedly appeared in the 2026 national budget.
He also claimed his life was under threat and called for an independent investigation into the matter.
The Presidency has consistently denied the existence of the council and rejected Adeyemi’s claims.
President Bola Tinubu subsequently directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the controversy, while Femi Gbajabiamila separately threatened legal action over alleged defamatory statements linked to the case.
With his arrest, attention is now focused on the forthcoming court proceedings, where prosecutors are expected to present evidence in support of the charges against the suspect.
