Villa sign Swiss star Manzambi

Aston Villa have completed the signing of highly rated Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from German club Freiburg in a deal reportedly worth more than £50 million, making the 20-year-old the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
The Premier League side moved swiftly to secure the services of one of Europe’s brightest young talents following his outstanding performances for Switzerland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Manzambi enjoyed a remarkable tournament, scoring three goals and providing two assists in just four matches before an injury ended his campaign.
His impressive displays helped Switzerland reach the World Cup quarter-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by finalists Argentina.
The midfielder also enjoyed an outstanding season with Freiburg, playing a key role in the club’s run to the UEFA Europa League final before they were defeated by Aston Villa.
His performances earned him the competition’s Young Player of the Season award and attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Newcastle United.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Manzambi expressed his excitement at joining Villa and fulfilling his ambition of playing in the English Premier League.
He described Aston Villa as one of England’s biggest clubs and said competing in the UEFA Champions League made the move even more attractive.
The Swiss international added that his previous encounter against Villa convinced him the club was the perfect destination for his development.
Manzambi also vowed to maintain the impressive form he displayed for both Freiburg and Switzerland as he begins a new chapter in England.
The signing marks Aston Villa’s first major acquisition of the summer transfer window as manager Unai Emery continues strengthening his squad ahead of another campaign in domestic and European competitions.
Villa are also reported to be closing in on the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes as Emery looks to reinforce his midfield following the departure of Belgian international Youri Tielemans to Manchester United in a deal worth around £35 million.
The arrival of Manzambi is expected to provide creativity, energy and attacking quality in midfield as Aston Villa aim to compete strongly in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League next season.
