Spain’s newly crowned World Cup champions have returned home to Madrid ahead of a grand victory parade expected to attract about one million supporters.
Captain Rodri led the team off the plane, lifting the World Cup trophy after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final in New Jersey to secure their second global title.
Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time, sparking nationwide celebrations after Spain’s first World Cup triumph since 2010.
The players were welcomed by supporters after a night of celebrations across the country, with Madrid streets left covered in the aftermath of the festivities.
The team is scheduled to meet King Felipe VI at Zarzuela Palace before a reception with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at La Moncloa.
An open-top bus parade will later take the champions through Madrid, ending at Cibeles Square, where a special celebration will be held.
“We’ll have to celebrate it one way or another, given that it only happens every four years,” a supporter, Bruno Gonzalez del Yerro, said.
Spain’s victory means the country now holds both the men’s and women’s World Cup trophies after the women’s team won the 2023 tournament.
