Germany pledges fresh investment in Nigeria

Nigeria, Berlin deepen ties in energy, technology, security
Nigeria and Germany have renewed their strategic partnership with fresh commitments to expand cooperation in energy, technology, manufacturing, security and skills development.
The commitment was reached in Abuja during talks between Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and her German counterpart, Johann Wadephul.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu described Germany as a key European ally, saying decades of relations between both nations had grown beyond diplomacy into areas such as trade, education, renewable energy, science, agriculture and infrastructure.
She said Nigeria was seeking stronger German investment in critical sectors, including clean energy, digital innovation, manufacturing, healthcare and critical minerals, while stressing the importance of technical training to empower young Nigerians.
The minister also highlighted the Nigeria-Germany Bi-National Commission as a major platform for turning agreements into practical projects.
Wadephul, on his part, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to expanding economic ties with Nigeria, promising increased investment as both countries celebrate more than six decades of diplomatic relations.
He said Nigeria remains Germany’s largest European trading partner on a bilateral basis, adding that trade between both countries increased by 10 per cent in the past year.
The German minister expressed confidence that more German companies would invest in Nigeria, particularly in the energy sector, while pledging continued support for regional peace and security efforts through cooperation with ECOWAS.
