The Presidency has described a letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a confirmation that Nigeria’s growing security partnership with the United States is producing positive results.
Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said the correspondence reflects international recognition of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to deepen cooperation with Washington, particularly in the fight against terrorism and insecurity.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Bwala urged Nigerians to focus on the message contained in the letter rather than debates over when it was made public.
He said the communication from the U.S. leader highlighted the progress achieved through intelligence sharing, military cooperation, training programmes, and joint counterterrorism efforts between both countries.
According to him, the partnership has contributed to major security operations, including the elimination of high-ranking terrorist figures and the disruption of planned attacks.
“The letter is recognition of the results of the collaboration that has assumed a much deeper and commendable level,” Bwala said.
The presidential aide maintained that the development represents a broader improvement in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements, adding that similar partnerships are being strengthened with other countries.
Responding to questions over the delay between the date of the letter and its public release, Bwala said the focus should remain on its content and the impact of ongoing cooperation.
He argued that the effectiveness of Nigeria’s international engagements should be measured by outcomes rather than political criticisms surrounding the timing of announcements.
The Presidency had earlier released the letter dated July 6, 2026, in which Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership in addressing terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities.
The letter also referenced stronger security ties under the U.S.-Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap, including improved intelligence coordination, training support for Nigerian forces, and joint operations against extremist groups.
The Presidency said the message further demonstrates the importance of continued collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in addressing security challenges and promoting stability.
