Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the reported assault on Mr. Tempo Mudi, a Protocol Officer to the Delta State Governor, during a political campaign event in Warri, describing the incident as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic culture.
Mudi was reportedly attacked by a group of youths while participating in a campaign for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, Delta State.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said political violence has no place in a democratic society, stressing that every Nigerian has the right to express political opinions without fear of intimidation or physical attack.
He maintained that democracy is sustained through dialogue, persuasion and the free exchange of ideas, not through violence or attempts to silence opposing voices.
While acknowledging the widespread frustration among Nigerians over the country’s economic challenges, Atiku said rising inflation, unemployment, declining purchasing power and worsening living conditions have left many citizens disillusioned.
He argued that public dissatisfaction with the current administration should be expressed through lawful and democratic means.
The presidential candidate for ADC urged Nigerians to resist the temptation of taking the law into their own hands, insisting that elections not violence remain the legitimate path to political change.
According to him, the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) remains the most effective tool for citizens seeking to hold leaders accountable and shape the country’s future.
Atiku also appealed to young people in Delta State and across Nigeria to remain peaceful, uphold the rule of law and channel their energy toward constructive democratic participation.
He further called on opposition supporters to demonstrate tolerance and respect for political differences, saying a truly democratic nation is one where citizens can freely express their views and governments are changed through the ballot box rather than acts of intimidation or brutality.
