The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, of showing anxiety over the growing strength of the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its State Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, the party said Wike’s recent criticism of former Rivers governor and ADC leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, reflected fear rather than political confidence.
The party described the minister’s remarks as contradictory, noting that his repeated attacks on opposition figures undermined his claim that they posed no electoral threat.
“It is ironic that a man who has repeatedly claimed that the opposition poses no threat has continued to devote so much time and energy attacking the very people he says have no electoral value.
“Such contradictions betray anxiety rather than confidence,” the statement said.
ADC maintained that Amaechi remained one of Rivers State’s most influential political leaders, insisting that his record in public office required no validation from political opponents.
The party also rejected Wike’s suggestion that the outcome of the 2027 general election was already certain, stressing that only the electorate could determine the result.
According to the statement, political declarations cannot override the will of the people.
The opposition party urged political leaders to focus on addressing pressing national issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and poor infrastructure instead of engaging in political confrontations.
“It is also curious that the Minister now seeks to present himself as the sole custodian of Rivers State’s political destiny.
“Rivers State belongs to its people, not to any individual,” it stated.
ADC reaffirmed its commitment to providing credible leadership and practical solutions to governance challenges, saying it would continue to engage citizens on issues that affect their welfare.
The party also advised Wike to concentrate on his responsibilities as FCT Minister and allow Rivers people to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or political grandstanding.
It expressed confidence that “truth, performance and the will of the people will ultimately prevail” in the 2027 general elections.
