Gov. Diri pledges good welfare package for corps members

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa has assured corps members serving in the State of good welfare packages.
He made the promise on Tuesday during the closing of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation exercise for members of the 2024 Batch B, Stream 1.
He added that the state would continue to explore ways of enhancing their welfare and security.
The exercise was held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Boro Town of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state.
Diri, represented by Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, Secretary to the State Government and Chairman, NYSC State Governing Board, advised them to hold on to their dreams and work toward achieving them.
He reminded them that the service year should not merely be to fulfil a requirement, but to make a lasting impact through their primary assignments and Community Development Service (CDS).
The governor admonished the corps members to serve as role models to other youths, students and pupils, always ready to mentor them to be responsible citizens and future leaders.
He urged host communities to accept the corps members by assisting them to settle down and teaching them their language and culture.
Diri cautioned employers not to reject any corps member without genuine reasons, just as he warned corps members not to induce rejection.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Charity Okpalifo, had earlier urged them to promptly report to their respective places of primary assignments and settle down for national service in Bayelsa.
She warned against engaging in actions that would put them in danger and negatively affect their service year.
The state coordinator reminded them that the primary assignment would run simultaneously with the CDS.
She, therefore, urged them to identify, initiate and execute viable projects that would address the needs of their host communities, leaving them with beneficial legacies.
Okpalifo assured that the state government and NYSC had put together a reward system for corps members who distinguished themselves during the service year.
She further enjoined them to consider national interest above tribal and sectional affiliations as that put Nigeria on the steady path of development.
