Tinubu’s running mate decision to be made after party convention, Basiru

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has stated that President Bola Tinubu enjoys overwhelming support from party stakeholders to run for re-election in 2027.
He said this on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme on Friday.
Bashiru, a former Senate spokesman, said Tinubu’s running mate would be decided after the party’s convention which is usually held about one year to the general election.
According to him, “As far as we are concerned, the national summit held in the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr President based on his track record and a large spectrum of stakeholders in our party have also overwhelmingly given endorsement to Mr president. ”
Basiru explained that the decision on Tinubu’s running mate would be made after the party’s national convention, typically held a year before the general election.
Basiru’s comments came after a recent summit in Gombe State where APC stakeholders from the North-East zone endorsed Tinubu for re-election.
The summit became rowdy when APC North-East Vice Chairman, Mustapha Salihu, named Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate without mentioning Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Some members protested, insisting that Shettima should be included in the endorsement.
Basiru, who was present at the summit, downplayed the controversy, saying it was normal for people in a democratic setting to have different opinions.
He added that the party hasn’t made any statement or gotten involved in the politics of the North-East region.
Rowdy session after Tinubu was named sole candidate without mentioning Vice President Shettima.
Twenty two APC governors unanimously adopted Tinubu as the party’s candidate for the 2027 election without mentioning Shettima.
Borno South Senator Ali Ndume distanced himself from the endorsement, citing former President Goodluck Jonathan’s loss despite similar endorsements.
