2 sentenced to 18 months in prison for extramarital sex

The Taliban Supreme Court in Kabul on Tuesday sentenced a man and woman to 39 lashes and 18 months in prison for engaging in extramarital sex.
It was unclear whether the floggings, carried out on Monday, took place in public as it has been the case in previous instances.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban have reinstated public punishments, including floggings and executions, for offences such as adultery, robbery and murder.
Taliban officials say the enforcement of sharia, or strict Islamic law is essential to reducing crime and ensuring public safety.
