The Niger State Police Command has recovered nine bodies along the Wawa-Lumma Road in Borgu Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns over the safety of travellers using the route.
The victims were believed to have been attacked and killed by suspected bandits while travelling through the area.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to Abiodun, security operatives were alerted on Tuesday after the bodies were discovered along the road.
Police and military tactical teams were subsequently deployed to the area to secure the scene and recover the victims.
The bodies were evacuated from the location as security forces moved to prevent further threats in the area.
Abiodun said clearance operations had since been intensified along the Wawa-Lumma corridor and adjoining communities as part of efforts to flush out criminal elements and restore confidence among road users.
The incident has renewed concerns about the security challenges confronting travellers along the route, particularly amid fears that armed groups may be exploiting isolated stretches of the road to target unsuspecting motorists and passengers.
