Agofure Aghogho’s battle for survival amidst anti-LGBTQ+ persecution

In a harrowing tale of identity, persecution, and resilience, 36-year-old Agofure Aghogho from Sapele Local Government Area of Delta, has disappeared after fleeing relentless threats under Nigeria’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws.
Aghogho’s story is one of suffering and courage. Born and raised in a society where homosexuality is both culturally condemned and legally punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
An inforned source from Sapele Delta State, revealed exclusively to HensardTimes that the young man spent most of his life concealing his true identity.
According to our source, who pleaded anonymity, “Aghogho’s first romantic experience shared with a male during his adolescence was transformative, yet marked the beginning of a life lived in fear.
“In an attempt to conform, Aghogho married and tried to bury his truth. But years later, a reconnection with a former partner became a devastating turning point”, he said.
He further explained, “Unknown to him, his friend had been under the watch of Nigeria’s aggressive anti-homosexuality task force.
“On April 25, 2025, Aghogho was ambushed in a hotel room by armed officers. He was beaten, threatened, and extorted for millions. They warned him: pay, or be publicly exposed.
“The threat of being outed in Nigeria, a country where mobs have lynched suspected homosexuals was as real as the bruises on his body”, he added.
Forced into hiding and constantly on the move, he lamented that Aghogho eventually disappeared in questionable circumstances!
“Some believe he managed to escape the country. Others fear the worst. What is certain is that his wife despite the shocking revelation stood by him and helped him flee.
“His fate remains unknown, but his story echoes the plight of thousands of LGBTQ+ Nigerians who live in constant danger simply for who they are” said our source”.
As global awareness of LGBTQ+ rights grows, Aghogho’s story remains a sobering reminder of how far some still have to run for freedom.
