FG reiterates commitment to education reform

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector through strategic support and reforms.
The assurance was made by Vice-President Kashim Shettima during a courtesy visit by the management of the University of Ibadan (UI)
The Vice-President, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Ibadan, was honoured with the institution’s highest alumni award, UI at 75 Ambassador Plenipotentiary.
This recognition is a testament to his outstanding contributions in public and private service. Shettima earned a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from UI in 1991.
During the visit, Shettima described the University of Ibadan as the “greatest citadel of learning in West Africa,” highlighting its historic influence and international stature.
He also assured the university management that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was committed to mobilising both public and private sector resources to support institutions like UI and elevate the country’s overall education system.
The Vice-President further highlighted key initiatives under the Tinubu administration, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), designed to support indigent students.
He said that the initiative was a crucial step towards addressing the needs of underprivileged students and promoting educational development in Nigeria.
Shettima also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economy, saying that the country has turned a corner and is on the path to sustained economic growth.
He cited increased tax revenue and the President’s understanding of commerce as evidence of progress.
Earlier, the University of Ibadan’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, noted that the UI at 75 Ambassador Plenipotentiary award was a special honour created solely for Shettima, considering his position and accomplishments.
You are a foremost alumnus of the University of Ibadan, the first and the best.
“We honoured some alumni as UI at 75 Ambassadors, but considering your position and accomplishments, we decided to create a special category, Ambassador Plenipotentiary, solely for you.
“We came here to honour one of our own, someone who has served in the banking sector, as Governor of Borno State, and now as Vice President of Nigeria,” the VC said.
