Trump gives Putin 10-12 day ultimatum to end Ukraine war

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, giving Moscow 10 to 12 days to make tangible progress toward ending its war in Ukraine or face severe economic consequences.
This development marked a significant escalation in President Trump’s pressure campaign on Russia, with the president expressing deep frustration over the lack of movement in peace negotiations.
Trump said that the new deadline would expire between August 7 and 9, after which the U.S. would impose “severe tariffs” and potential sanctions targeting Russia’s trading partners.
“There’s no reason in waiting. We just don’t see any progress being made,” Trump said, emphasising that Putin must make a deal to stop the ongoing bloodshed.
Trump’s growing frustration with Putin’s stance on the Ukraine war is evident in his recent statements.
“I’m disappointed in President Putin,” Trump said, criticising the Russian leader for failing to follow through on his words.
Trump emphasised that economic leverage, rather than diplomacy alone, is key to forcing a resolution.
The president’s ultimatum comes amid continued Russian aggression in Ukraine, with Moscow launching hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities.
In response, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired over 300 drones, four cruise missiles, and three ballistic missiles overnight, targeting primarily the western Ukrainian city of Starokostiantyniv, home to a military airbase.
Ukrainian officials have welcomed Trump’s tough stance on Russia.
Andrii Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, praised Trump’s firm position, saying that “Putin understands only strength and that has been conveyed clearly and loudly.”
LYermak added that Ukraine shared Trump’s sentiment, underscoring the need for a strong approach in negotiations with Russia.
If Russia fails to comply with Trump’s ultimatum, the U.S. is expected to impose severe economic sanctions and tariffs.
Trump warned that Russia’s economy would face a “massive penalty” if it doesn’t make progress toward peace.
The potential consequences of these measures could further destabilize global markets and complicate diplomatic efforts.
International reaction to Trump’s proposal remained mixed, with some European allies reportedly wary of unilateral U.S. measures.
Others argue that Trump’s hardline stance could finally spur meaningful talks. Kremlin officials have not responded to Trump’s latest remarks, maintaining a cautious approach.
