UK Homelessness Minister Rushanara Ali quits over rent hike

UK’s Homelessness Minister, Rushanara Ali, has resigned from her position after facing criticism for increasing the rent on a property she owns in London.
The rent hike, which was over £700 ($940) higher than the previous rent, sparked outrage among homelessness charities and opposition lawmakers.
Ali stated in her resignation letter to Prime Minister, Keir Starmer that she had “followed all relevant legal requirements” but decided to step down to avoid distracting from the government’s work.
The controversy began when it was reported that Ali had given four tenants four months’ notice to leave her London property, only to re-list it at a significantly higher rent a few weeks later.
Starmer thanked Ali for her “diligent work” at the housing ministry, particularly her efforts to repeal the Vagrancy Act.
Tory Party Chairman Kevin Hollinrake, accused Ali of “staggering hypocrisy,” while a Liberal Democrat spokesperson welcomed her resignation, saying her actions “only added insult to injury after years of delay for renters’ rights reform”.
The UK government is currently working on a Renters’ Rights Bill that aims to ban landlords from re-listing properties for rent within six months of evicting tenants.
The bill is particularly relevant to Ali’s situation, as she had ended the tenants’ fixed-term contract to sell the property, but then re-listed it for rent at a higher price.
Ali’s resignation highlighted the challenges faced by politicians in balancing their personal interests with their public roles, especially when it comes to sensitive issues like housing and rent control.
