Radio station suspends GM for criticising Ebonyi government

Legacy FM, a private radio station in Ebonyi State, has suspended its Acting General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere, over alleged criticisms of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration.
The suspension was announced on air on Saturday, August 9, 2025, citing “unruly behaviour” and disobedience to the station’s code of conduct.
Chikwere’s suspension took effect immediately, and he was directed to hand over all company property to the next senior officer.
The management accused Chikwere of violating the station’s code of conduct by criticizing the governor’s administration on air and social media.
Chikwere claimed the administration suffered from poor communication, underperformance by appointees, and lack of clear policy direction.
He advised Nwifuru to “step on toes to achieve results,” saying that the current state of affairs weakened the governor’s support base.
Reacting, the Chief Press to the governor, Mr Monday Uzor described Chikwere’s criticisms as unfounded and baseless, accusing him of being ungrateful for the government’s support.
Uzor highlighted the government’s support for Legacy FM, including a brand-new Changan SUV, a transformer, and road construction leading to the station.
On his part, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Ikeuwa Omebeh, condemned Chikwere’s remarks as derogatory and inciting, warning against attempts to incite citizens against their leaders.
Some residents have expressed concern over the suspension, emphasising the importance of media freedom and accountability.
