FG disburses N5.12bn in pension arrears to retirees under DBS

The Federal Government has disbursed N5.12 billion in pension arrears to 90,689 retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).
The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) announced the disbursement on Monday, August 11, 2025, saying that it had finalised the payment to pensioners across four pension departments.
In a statement dated August 11, 2025, and signed by the Head of the Corporate Communications Unit, Olugbenga Ajayi, PTAD said that the move was in line with the government’s commitment to clear outstanding pension liabilities.
It reads in part: “In keeping with its assurance to clear outstanding pension liabilities as funds are disbursed by the Federal Government, the PTAD has finalised the disbursement of N5,119,328,000 to 90,689 pensioners across the four pension departments.
”PTAD reaffirmed its continued dedication and unwavering commitment to pensioners’ welfare,” the agency said.
According to the breakdown in the statement, 8,626 pensioners in the Customs, Immigration, and Prisons Pension Department (CIPPD) received N276,032,000, while 9,681 pensioners under the Police Pension Department received N619,584,000.
PTAD also stated that while 12,773 retirees in the Civil Service Pension Department received N408,736,000, 59,609 retirees in the Parastatals Pension Department received N3,814,976,000
The agency said that the payment reaffirmed the administration’s ongoing commitment to “ensuring that pensioners receive their due entitlements in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu”.
The disbursement comes after President Tinubu approved measures to improve the welfare of DBS pensioners on August 9, 2025.
However, despite this development, some retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners protested on Monday over unpaid entitlements, including up to 35 months of pension arrears and non-payment of N35,000 palliative.
The protesters were mainly retirees from agencies like NITEL, FRCN, and NRC.
