Tems launches initiative to empower African female artists

Tems, a two-time Grammy winner, has been making waves in the music industry with her powerful voice and unapologetic attitude.
Recently, she opened up about the challenges women face in the industry, saying that “people don’t really respect women” in music.
In an interview with the BBC Africa, Tems explained that getting respect as a woman in the business wasn’t easy.
“It was difficult to find people to take me seriously, but it didn’t mean that I stopped. I just kept going,” she said.
For her, the mission goes beyond personal success, it’s about redefining how women see themselves and how they are seen by others.
Despite these obstacles, Tems said she was determined to change the narrative and has launched “The Leading Vibe Initiative” to support and empower African female singers, songwriters, and producers
Tems wants to change the way people see women and the way women see themselves in music, pushing for visible representation across various roles, including producers, audio engineers, and managers.
She advised young artists to stay true to themselves and set clear boundaries, saying “When people tell you to change your sound, change your style, you look at them and say no.”
Tems said women could thrive in any space they choose, whether in music or other industries, and is proof of herself, having become a part-owner of the U.S. football club San Diego FC.
“It’s a space where women are underrepresented, and I wanted it to be known that women can be in any space if they want,” she said about women playing football.
From the studio to the football field, Tems is proving that women can break boundaries and thrive wherever they choose.
