Teenager detained after attacking pupils with hammer at school

A 15-year-old boy was detained in southern Germany on Thursday after injuring two pupils with a hammer at his former school.

Emergency services said the two 14-year-olds were taken to hospital with light injuries after the attack in Friedberg, a town of some 30,000 inhabitants near the city of Augsburg.

The police spokesman said that the motive of the attacker is unclear,.

According to the police, the 15-year-old was once a pupil at the secondary school.

The altercation is said to have taken place in the school playground shortly before school started.

The suspect tried to flee after the attack. However, the police were quickly on the scene and were able to apprehend him.

The incident led to a large-scale police operation around the secondary school, located in the centre of the city.

Numerous emergency vehicles and officers were seen in the streets and individual areas were cordoned off.

A rescue helicopter was also requested, but did not have to be deployed.

School operations were continuing, police said on Facebook, while witnesses were being questioned on site.
