Court dismisses suit against Akpabio, senate over Natasha’s suspension

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the six-month suspension of Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, filed against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Marked FHC/ABJ/CS/654/2025, the suit contested the validity of the suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for various reasons.
Delivering the judgement on Friday, Justice James Omotosho ruled that the plaintiffs, Ovavu Illiyasu and nine others, lacked the legal standing to contest the suspension.
The judge held that the plaintiffs lacked the legal authority to bring the matter before the court.
The ruling reaffirms the Senate’s autonomy in managing internal discipline.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan resumed her legislative duties on September 23, 2025, after the National Assembly unsealed her office.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, over alleged violations of Senate standing rules.
Despite the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan continued to perform her duties, and the court later ordered her immediate reinstatement, describing the suspension as unlawful.
The Senate has appealed the decision, and the matter is currently pending before the Court of Appeal.
