President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Nigerian evangelist Dr. Uma Ukpai, whom he described as “one of God’s generals” known for his unwavering faith, love, and discipline.

The Ukpai family confirmed that the evangelist passed away on October 6 at the age of 80.

In a statement, President Tinubu hailed Dr. Ukpai as a passionate crusader whose ministry significantly impacted Christian revival movements across Nigeria and Africa during the 1980s.

He recalled notable events such as the Greater Ibadan for Christ crusade in 1982 and the Greater Lagos for Christ crusade in 1985 as landmark moments.

“Dr. Ukpai was a devoted soldier in the Lord’s army who helped ignite a wave of spiritual revival across the region,” Tinubu said.

Beyond preaching, Tinubu highlighted Ukpai’s humanitarian efforts, including establishing schools, hospitals, and charitable organizations to support the less privileged.

The president emphasised the late evangelist’s role in fostering unity across diverse faiths and communities.

“His mission was to promote peace, harmony, and build bridges among people of different backgrounds,” he added.

Tinubu offered prayers for the repose of Dr. Ukpai’s soul and extended condolences to his wife, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, their children, and the ministry’s members.

The Ukpai family described his passing as a “glorious transition,” celebrating a life dedicated to God and humanity.

They praised his commitment to spreading the gospel with integrity and passion and noted that his teachings and mentorship will continue inspiring believers worldwide.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
