Chinese embassy, sports commission announce 2025 China-Nigeria Wushu Championship

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, in partnership with the National Sports Commission, has announced the upcoming Chinese Ambassador’s Cup Wushu Championship, also known as the China-Nigeria Friendship Cup.
The event is scheduled to take place from October 29 to 31, 2025, at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
This championship marks the second edition of the tournament, returning seven years after its inaugural event, which was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is jointly organised by the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria and the Abuja Wushu Association.
Mr. Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor and Director of the China Cultural Centre, said the event aims to foster deeper cultural exchange and friendship between China and Nigeria.
He described Wushu as a traditional Chinese martial art promoting peace, respect, and self-development.
Speaking at a press briefing, Yang highlighted that Wushu is more than just a competitive sport; it teaches self-defence, respect, and responsibility, serving as a bridge for cultural understanding and reinforcing shared values of peace and discipline cherished by both nations.
He added, “our friendship with Nigeria ranks among the strongest in Africa, and cultural understanding forms the foundation of lasting cooperation.”
The 2025 Championship will be held under international Wushu standards, supervised by trained referees and affiliated with the International Wushu Federation (IWUF).
Mr. Mykel Eneduwa, Nigerian Wushu Kung Fu Federation representative and co-organiser, revealed the tournament would feature six competitive divisions, including,Taiji (Tai Chi), Sanshou (Sanda) — male and female weight categories, Team forms, Creative forms.
He noted that this event is notable as Nigerian athletes will be financially rewarded, with cash prizes of N500,000 for first place, N300,000 for second, and N200,000 for third, plus consolation prizes.
He noted that registration for athletes is free, with accommodation and feeding provided throughout the championship.
The event will be open to both professional athletes and newcomers, with a minimum age limit of 17 years for combat events.
Mr. Sesan Adeboyejo, representing the National Sports Commission, praised the collaboration, highlighting Wushu’s role in promoting discipline and self-control among youth, and offering a positive outlet for young Nigerians.
The organisers invite the public, martial arts enthusiasts, and families to attend the three-day championship. Due to limited seating, spectators must register online or present invitation cards.
More than 150 athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to participate in this culturally rich and competitive event.
