Nigeria mourns live-band legend Akiin Shuga

Renowned Nigerian musician and live-band pioneer, Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50.
The celebrated performer and founder of Shuga Band died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, leaving behind a legacy that has deeply shaped Nigeria’s live music scene.
Akiin Shuga, widely regarded as Nigeria’s Live-Band Grandmaster, was celebrated for transforming event entertainment and mentoring generations of musicians.
Born in Ondo State, he overcame polio at the age of five and rose to national prominence through decades of dedication and professionalism.
In an official family statement, he was described as “a revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”
The statement also highlighted his role as Managing Director of Shuga Limb Foundation and Shuga Entertainment, Nigeria’s leading live band company, noting that he “redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose.”
Tributes have begun pouring in from across Nigeria’s creative community, celebrating his life, resilience, and contributions to live music.
The family requested privacy during this difficult time, with details of funeral and memorial arrangements to be announced later.
Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
His family expressed gratitude to all who have sent prayers, tributes, and messages of support, emphasising that his legacy through Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment will endure.
“May his noble soul find eternal rest,” the statement said.
