Edo governor signs tough law on public property

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo, has signed a law imposing up to 10 years’ imprisonment for anyone who forcefully enters government-owned property.
The law also prescribes a five-year jail term for unauthorised sale or transfer of state assets without the governor’s consent.
The Edo State Public Property Protection Law, 2025 establishes a committee to safeguard public assets, prevent encroachment, and collaborate with law enforcement to enforce compliance.
Professionals aiding illegal land transactions face prosecution and potential disciplinary action from regulatory bodies.
Governor Okpebholo stressed that public property belongs to the people, warning that false claims or petitions related to government lands will attract severe penalties.
The law aims to curb misuse, protect citizens’ assets, and ensure accountability in Edo State.
