Even behind the walls of a custodial centre, suspended Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, is reportedly continuing to show concern for the welfare of fellow inmates.
Izeze was remanded at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Warri on Monday after he was arraigned before a Delta State High Court sitting in Effurun over an alleged assault involving Simon Umudi, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Protocol.
His associate, Simeon Aguariavwodo, was also remanded in connection with the case as proceedings continue.
But rather than allowing his legal predicament to overshadow his interaction with other inmates, Izeze has reportedly turned his attention to finding ways to support those around him.
Sources at the custodial facility said the suspended commissioner has been planning an inmates’ football tournament tagged “Ukodo na Tevwe”, an initiative intended to provide recreation and foster a sense of community among the inmates.
The reports are particularly notable because Izeze is said to be dealing with health challenges while also facing an ongoing court case.
Beyond recreation, the former commissioner has reportedly intervened in the financial difficulties of some inmates by paying fines they could not afford, helping to secure their release and reducing the pressure on their families.
His reported intervention does not end there.
Izeze is also said to be working with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on a water project for the custodial centre, with the aim of improving access to potable water for inmates.
The initiatives have reportedly drawn attention within the facility, where sources described Izeze as maintaining a positive outlook despite his detention and legal troubles.
His reported conduct has painted a picture of a man attempting to remain useful to others even while navigating his own difficult circumstances.
For the inmates benefiting from his interventions, his presence has reportedly become more than that of another detainee.
His efforts around fines, recreation and access to water suggest a continued focus on welfare despite the circumstances surrounding his detention.
The allegations against Izeze remained before the court, and he is yet to have his case determined. Meanwhile, his reported acts of support have continued to generate interest within the custodial facility.
