Active electricity customers In Nigeria rise to 11.96 million — NERC

The number of active electricity customers in Nigeria rose to 11.96 million in August 2025, up from 11.89 million in July, according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram accounts on Monday, NERC disclosed that the figures were contained in its Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025.
The Commission said the updated customer data covers all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across the country.
Of the total customers, 6.58 million have been metered, representing a metering rate of 55.01 per cent, a slight increase from 54.71 per cent recorded in July.
NERC added that 70,888 new meters were installed in August, compared to 76,783 in July, underscoring the sustained progress of metering across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The regulator noted that the improved metering rate reflected ongoing reforms and investments in customer management by DisCos, aimed at improving billing transparency and boosting consumer confidence.
Among the top-performing DisCos in metering coverage were Eko, Ikeja, and Abuja, with rates of 84.25 per cent, 84.83 per cent, and 73.92.per cent respectively.
In April, NERC sanctioned eight DisCos including Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ikeja Electric (IKEDC), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), Kaduna Electric, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) — for breaching energy caps on estimated billing for unmetered customers.
The Commission imposed a combined fine of over N628 million and directed each utility to issue credit adjustments to affected consumers.
Earlier, NERC’s Q2 2025 report revealed that DisCos installed 225,631 meters during the quarter — a 20.55 per cent increase from the 187,161 units deployed in the first quarter.
Of these, 147,823 meters (65.52%) were installed under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, 65,315 through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), 12,259 via Vendor Financed arrangements, and 234 meters under the DisCo Financed model.
