Defence minister reaffirms protection for Armed Forces ….launches initiatives for veterans, security

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces while they carry out lawful duties.

He warned against actions that could undermine the authority, professionalism, or dignity of uniformed personnel.

The statement followed a viral video showing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike verbally confronting a naval officer on guard duty at a disputed estate in Abuja.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja to flag off the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), Badaru emphasized the government’s resolve to protect officers engaged in legitimate assignments.

He unveiled the theme for the 2026 celebrations as:“Valour, Sacrifice and Unity: Honouring Our Heroes”

This theme reflects the enduring spirit of courage, patriotism, and selfless service that defines the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Officers on lawful duty represent the authority of the Nigerian state and must be treated with respect and accorded the necessary support to discharge their responsibilities effectively,” he stated.

The Defence minister highlighted that the Ministry would continue to strengthen internal mechanisms to ensure officers remain disciplined, professional, and adequately protected.

He appealed to public office holders and citizens to cooperate with security agencies, stressing that mutual respect and collaboration are crucial for lasting peace and development.

Badaru announced the launch of the Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P), aimed at deploying retired military veterans to secure and rehabilitate areas previously occupied by terrorists.

The programme will combine security reinforcement with local economic projects, such as farming and mining, to prevent the resurgence of terrorism.

He also introduced the “Thank A Soldier” QR Code, allowing Nigerians at home and abroad to send personalised messages of appreciation to troops on the frontlines.

On ongoing operations, the Defence Minister revealed that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration over 13,000 terrorists and criminals neutralised, more than 17,000 suspects arrested, nearly 10,000 hostages rescued among others.

Badaru also announced plans to enhance veterans’ welfare, including the creation of a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre. Already, 2,141 Civil War veterans previously ineligible for pensions have been enrolled.

The government intended to amend the Nigerian Legion Act and rename it the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) to reflect its expanded role in supporting ex-service personnel.
