FG pledges review of private security companies Act of 1986

The Federal Government has announced plans to review the Private Security Companies (PSC) Act of 1986 to align it with contemporary security challenges and international best practices.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration during the 5th Private Security Industry summit and the 9th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria (ALPSPN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the growing importance of private security companies in strengthening national security, particularly through intelligence gathering.

“Private security companies are critical not only for protection but also for providing credible intelligence that can inform national security strategies,” he said.

He assured that the government was committed to making Nigeria’s private security sector internationally competitive, professionally managed, and staffed with trained, reliable personnel.

The Minister also stressed that a more coordinated and robust private security industry is vital for improving the overall security landscape in the country.

NSCDC Commandant Ahmed Audi commended the summit for its timeliness and reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to close collaboration with ALPSPN to strengthen nationwide security cooperation.

Meanwhile, ALPSPN President Dr. Chris Adigwu noted that the summit provided a platform to identify gaps in the sector and develop a coordinated framework that complements national security objectives.

The summit brought together key stakeholders across Nigeria’s security sector to discuss strategies for enhancing the effectiveness and professionalism of private security services.
