EFCC releases Obi supporters after interrogation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released two prominent members of the Obidient Movement, Peter Akah and Oruche Precious, popularly known as Mama Pee, after questioning them over allegations of naira abuse.

The duo honoured an invitation by the anti-graft agency and spent several hours at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday before they were released around midnight on Thursday.

Chidiebere Mark, an activist popularly known as Justice Crack, who accompanied the two supporters to the commission’s office, confirmed their release in a post on X.

He said Akah and Precious were asked to return to the EFCC headquarters on Thursday afternoon as investigations into the matter continued.

“My dear brother, @Peter4Nigeria, and my sister, @MamaPee__, were invited by the EFCC. I personally accompanied them there on the afternoon of 15th July 2026,” Mark wrote.

The development had generated reactions on social media after news emerged that the two supporters had honoured the commission’s invitation and remained at its facility for several hours.

Although EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale did not respond to enquiries, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represents the duo, confirmed that the investigation was linked to allegations of naira abuse.

Effiong said his clients explained to investigators that the items being questioned were entertainment props and not genuine Nigerian currency notes.

“We arrived at the Commission with Peter for Nigeria and Mama Pee on Wednesday and met with the investigators,” he said.

“After cooperating with the Commission, our clients were released and we departed the EFCC headquarters. We will be going today in furtherance of the investigation.”

The lawyer added that the EFCC handled the interrogation professionally, while his clients remained confident and appreciative of public concern over their safety.

He said the duo maintained that the money-like items used in the content under investigation were props intended for entertainment purposes.

The incident comes weeks after Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accused the federal government of targeting opposition figures.

Obi had alleged that some Nigerians were becoming hesitant to associate with him due to fears of possible government actions against his supporters.
