ADC demands probe into death of Umahi’s house guest

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for an independent investigation into the death of Ms. Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
The opposition party said the circumstances surrounding her death had raised serious public concerns, arguing that the matter had gone beyond a private tragedy because it involved the residence of a serving cabinet member.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said only a transparent and impartial inquiry could address the questions surrounding the incident and restore public confidence.
The party questioned the nature of Habila’s official assignment, why she was staying at the minister’s private residence, and the events that led to her death.
ADC insisted that answers must come through evidence and proper investigation rather than official explanations, calling for a full autopsy and the public release of the findings.
The party warned that anything short of a credible probe could increase public suspicion and further weaken trust in government institutions.
The ADC also linked the incident to what it described as a wider pattern of alleged accountability failures under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, accusing the government of shielding officials facing serious allegations.
According to the party, public officials should be subjected to independent scrutiny whenever controversies arise, rather than being protected because of their positions.
The opposition group said the case was particularly sensitive because it involved the death of a young Nigerian within the residence of a senior government official, stressing that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
