Tinubu sets out on 2-nation diplomatic your to South Africa and Angola

President Bola Tinubu is expected to leave Abuja on Wednesday for a diplomatic mission that will take him to Johannesburg, South Africa, and later to Luanda, Angola.

The trip, announced on Tuesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, marks another round of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s voice on global economic and political issues.

According to the statement, Tinubu’s first port of call will be Johannesburg, where he will participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit.

”This year’s meeting is being hosted by South Africa under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20.

The invitation to Nigeria, Onanuga noted, underscored the group’s recognition of the country’s strategic role on the continent.

The Nigerian leader was similarly invited to the 2024 summit in Rio de Janeiro during Brazil’s presidency of the group.

The Johannesburg summit, which runs from November 22 to 23 at the expansive Johannesburg Expo Centre, will gather heads of government from the world’s largest economies as well as representatives from the African Union, the European Union, and major global financial institutions.

Deliberations over the two days will revolve around the theme, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” with discussions spread across three plenary sessions.

Key issues on the agenda include inclusive economic growth, global trade, development financing, debt challenges, climate change, disaster risk reduction, energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work, and the fast-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

While in Johannesburg, President Tinubu is also scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings aimed at advancing the objectives of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of regional security, economic partnerships, and international cooperation.

Following the G20 gathering, the President will proceed to Angola for the 7th African Union–European Union Summit, slated for November 24 and 25.

The Luanda meeting is expected to convene heads of state and government alongside young innovators, civil society leaders, and policy experts from both continents.

Discussions will span shared priorities such as climate resilience, inclusive development, infrastructure, the digital economy, creative industries, manufacturing, and agricultural value chains.

President Tinubu will be accompanied on the trip by a high-powered delegation that includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake; Minister of Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

The President is expected to return to the country after the conclusion of both engagements.
