Oborevwori inaugurates new housing cluster in Okuama, ushers in community rebirth

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, on Tuesday inaugurated a new cluster of housing units and supporting infrastructure in Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, signaling a major milestone in the state government’s ongoing efforts to rebuild the community following the tragic events of March 2024.

The inauguration comes after Okuama was devastated when 17 Nigerian Army personnel were killed, an incident that led to widespread displacement and a period of uncertainty for the community’s residents.

The completion of these housing units marks a significant step in restoring stability and offering hope to the indigenes who had been uprooted.

Represented at the ceremony by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori emphasised the broader significance of the project.

“This is more than a ceremony; it is a moment of renewal,” Onyeme quoted the governor.

“It is a time to turn the page from pain to possibility, from loss to restoration, and from despair to hope.

”We are not merely commissioning buildings; we are reaffirming our commitment to peace, dignity, and shared prosperity.”

He stressed the resilience of the Okuama people: “The memories of those tragic events are still painful, and the wounds are not yet fully healed.

”Yet, in the face of adversity, we have chosen the path of rebuilding, reconciliation, and collective rebirth.

”This resettlement center is a symbol of that resolve, a place where families can regain stability and the community can rise again, ” he said.

Oborevwori, guided by the principles of the ‘MORE Agenda’, has remained focused on restoring communities, rebuilding trust, and safeguarding the dignity of all residents in Delta State.

The housing project, he said, exemplified what government could achieve when leadership is guided by compassion and responsibility.

In addition to the governor’s remarks, the Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Hon. Lucky Avweromre, noted that the Community Resettlement Center was constructed by the local council.

He also expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for the simultaneous provision of a primary school, a secondary school, and a primary health center for Okuama residents.

Representatives of the Okuama Community, Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Comrade Akemor Victor, in a joint address, praised the state government’s intervention.

“The events of March 14, 2024, were unprecedented for our community.

”But thanks to the timely intervention of Governor Oborevwori, the situation was mitigated.

We are grateful for a leader who listens to his people, and we pledge our support to maintaining peace and unity in our community, ” they said.

The project features 40 housing units, two blocks of buildings with 20 toilets and bathrooms, a solar-powered water reticulation system, and a paved, roofed walkway connecting all structures, reflecting a modern approach to community planning and sustainable infrastructure.

Oborevwori urged the residents to embrace this new beginning with unity and collective responsibility.

He extended appreciation to contractors, the Ministry of Housing, the local government council, security agencies, and community leaders who made the project a reality, but reserved special commendation for the resilience and patience of the Okuama people, describing them as “the true heroes of this moment.”
