Ufoma, Mene, Tamaratonye clinch top spots in Bayelsa spelling bee competition

Superior Ufoma and Elora Mene of Jade British International School emerged first and second, respectively, in the 12th edition of the Bayelsa Spelling Bee competition held on Thursday in Yenagoa.

The first-place winner, Superior Ufoma, received a cash prize of N300,000, while Elora Mene took home N100,000.

Owei Tamaratonye from Ayakpo Comprehensive College finished third and was awarded N50,000.

Fourth-place honours were shared by Daniel Okara of New Total Child School and Karina Ebi.

Speaking after the prize presentation, the competition’s convener, Dr. Ebidenyefa Tarila-Nikade, said the event was designed to provide a platform for young people to excel academically and discover their unique talents.

“Our mission is to create opportunities for young people to express themselves and grow into champions.

“The competition sharpens their ideas, enhances literary competence, and encourages self-discovery and educational advancement, ” he said.

First-place winner Superior Ufoma expressed gratitude to the organisers and sponsors for the opportunity, noting that it allowed students to showcase their skills in spelling.

She also encouraged fellow participants to persevere and continue striving for excellence in future competitions.

The Bayelsa Spelling Bee, now in its 12th edition, continues to nurture literacy, self-confidence, and educational curiosity among students across the state.
