Plateau state shuts basic schools amid security concerns
Plateau State authorities have ordered the immediate closure of basic schools in the state due to what they described as “potential threats” to student safety.
The directive, issued by the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB), outlines that Government Junior Model Secondary Schools (GJMSSs) will close starting Saturday, 22 November 2025, while primary and day schools will close Monday, 24 November, 2025.
PSUBEB urged local education authorities, school administrators, and community leaders to fully cooperate with the order and remain vigilant.
The board emphasised that the closures were temporary, aimed at safeguarding learners and reassuring communities of the government’s commitment to student safety.
Plateau joins Katsina and Kwara states, which recently closed schools over rising insecurity and a spate of mass abductions.
In recent days, attacks in Kebbi and Niger states have seen dozens of students kidnapped, prompting heightened concerns nationwide.
The Federal Government has also directed the closure of 41 Federal Unity Colleges in response to recent security challenges, reinforcing preventive measures across affected areas.
