Media Freedom: Oborevwori earns praise, CPS honoured for excellence

The Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (ACNPN), Delta State Chapter, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for sustaining a media-friendly atmosphere that allows journalism to thrive across the state.

As part of this recognition, the Association presented a distinguished merit award to the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, celebrating his dedication to ethical reporting and his outstanding service as the governor’s chief spokesperson.

The award was conferred during the 2025 Publishers Week, Lecture and Awards ceremony held on Thursday in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area.

This year’s event, themed “Empowering the People: Community Newspapers, Mental Health Awareness — Access to Basic Healthcare and Health Unity: The Role of Cooperative Societies in Promoting Community Healthcare and Mental Wellness,” underscored the vital partnership between the media and the Delta State Government in promoting transparency, accountability and community engagement.

Presenting the award on behalf of the Association, the Member representing Oshimili North in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Frank Esenwah, expressed delight in honouring a veteran journalist whose professional record speaks for itself.

Receiving the award on behalf of the CPS, Assistant Director of Information, Mr. Ivovi Aruoriwo, conveyed Ahon’s appreciation to the Association.

Ahon described the honour as a meaningful encouragement to remain steadfast in his values and to continue pursuing excellence.

“An award of this nature serves as a powerful motivator, encouraging me to stay on track, uphold my values, and strive for excellence in all my endeavours,” he said.

Dedicating the award to God, Governor Oborevwori, his media team and colleagues across the state, Ahon applauded the Association and journalists for their ongoing collaboration with the government in strengthening the link between public institutions and grassroots communities.

Earlier, the State Chairman of ACNPN, Comrade Ike Abiagom, noted in his welcome address that the ceremony marked another milestone in the Association’s commitment to reinforcing community journalism and its role in grassroots development.

He commended Governor Oborevwori for creating an enabling environment for media practitioners and assured that the Association remains committed to informing, educating and uplifting communities throughout Delta State.
