VP Shettima departs South Africa for AU-EU summit in Angola

Following the conclusion of his engagements at the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Vice President Kashim Shettima departed the South African city on Sunday en route to Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the 7th African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Summit.

According to a statement released by Shettima’s Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President will join other Heads of State and Government from both the African Union and the European Union at the two-day summit, scheduled from November 24 to 25, 2025, in the Angolan capital.

The AU-EU Summit aims to foster collaboration on shared priorities between the two unions, with a particular focus on addressing pressing global and continental challenges.

The meeting will convene young leaders, innovators, and representatives of Civil Society Organisations, creating a platform for dialogue and brainstorming on initiatives that could shape the socio-economic future of Africa and Europe.

Key areas of focus for the summit include climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies; promoting inclusive development across member states; investment in infrastructure projects and regional connectivity; advancing the digital economy and technological innovation among others.

The summit is expected to culminate in actionable recommendations for policy and investment, aimed at deepening EU-AU partnerships and strengthening Africa’s role in global economic governance.

Vice President Shettima’s participation underscored Nigeria’s active role in continental and global diplomacy, particularly in fostering economic development, regional security, and sustainable growth.

By representing President Tinubu, Shettima is tasked with articulating Nigeria’s positions on issues such as climate resilience, economic inclusivity, and industrialisation, while engaging in high-level bilateral discussions with European counterparts.

The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the summit, bringing back insights and potential strategic partnerships that could benefit Nigeria’s domestic development agenda.

The 7th AU-EU Summit in Luanda is seen as a critical forum for strengthening cooperation, addressing systemic challenges, and empowering the next generation of African and European leaders through policy innovation and cross-continental dialogue.
