Catholic diocese of Kontagora releases names of 265 students, staff still in captivity

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora in Niger State has published the full list of 265 students and staff members of St Mary’s School, Papiri, who remain in captivity following the mass abduction that occurred on 21 November.

Armed attackers stormed the Catholic-run school, abducting 315 individuals, including 303 students and 12 teachers.

In the days following the incident, 50 students reportedly escaped, reducing the number of those still missing to 265.

On Monday, the diocese released the names of 239 pupils from the nursery and primary sections, 14 secondary school students, and 12 teachers and non-academic staff yet to regain their freedom.

The move was aimed at ensuring accurate record-keeping and keeping families, authorities, and the public informed about the ongoing situation.

Church officials and community leaders have urged security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the remaining captives.

Many of those abducted are very young children, heightening concerns for their welfare.

The diocese also listed 239 pupils from the nursery and primary sections, including Natherniel Andrew, Shalom Terry, Ajikovi Andrew, Zacharia Sabastine, John Lois, Yohanna Veronica, Emmanuel Ibrahim, Ayuba Linus, Bulus Christopher, Ibrahim Micah, and many others, reflecting the urgent need for coordinated rescue efforts.

The diocese reiterated its call for immediate action from security authorities, stressing that the safe return of the abducted children and staff remains a top priority.

Families of the victims continue to await updates on efforts to rescue their loved ones.
