Bayelsa makes history with inaugural flight of State-owned Aircraft

Bayelsa State marked a historic milestone on Tuesday as Governor Douye Diri led the inaugural flight of one of two newly acquired state-owned aircraft, signaling a new era in the state’s aviation and economic development.
The ATR-72/600 aircraft departed from the domestic wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 09:30 a.m., carrying approximately 50 passengers, including Governor Diri, former Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah, members of the state’s National Assembly Caucus, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, President of the Ijaw National Congress, Professor Ben Okaba, and PANDEF National Chairman, Dr. Boladei Igali.
The plane touched down at Bayelsa Airport at 10:40 a.m., greeted by jubilant crowds and a traditional water cannon salute.
Governor Diri described the occasion as historic, emphasizing that it marked the fulfilment of his administration’s promise to enhance air connectivity for Bayelsa residents.
“Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes wing.
“This achievement marks the beginning of a new era, bringing reliable air services that fuel commerce, connect businesses to new markets, and empower our people.”
The governor announced that the airline, initially registered as Pioneer Airline, would be renamed Air Bayelsa or Bayelsa Air ahead of commercial operations, underscoring its status as a state-owned venture.
He also acknowledged the pioneering contributions of past leaders, including the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who conceptualised the airport, and former Governor Seriake Dickson, who brought the project to completion.
Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, highlighted the airline’s operational plans, noting that it would provide daily flights to Lagos and Abuja, with future expansion to other Niger Delta states.
Pioneer Airlines Managing Director, Captain Henry Ungbuku, affirmed that the airline would reflect the aspirations of Bayelsa residents and the Niger Delta region, promising operational excellence.
Premium Trust Bank, a key partner in the acquisition, was lauded by its Managing Director, Emmanuel Emefienim, for contributing strategically to the project.
Senator Konbowei Benson, representing the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus, and Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Lokpobiri, praised the governor’s vision and pledged support to ensure the airline’s sustainability.
NDDC MD Dr. Sam Ogbuku welcomed the development, noting its potential to enhance regional connectivity, while PANDEF Chairman Dr. Boladei Igali expressed pride in Governor Diri’s achievement and promised continued support.
The inaugural flight represents a significant step in Bayelsa’s broader efforts to expand infrastructure, boost commerce, and create new opportunities for residents.
