Edo Govt. intensifies highway surveillance amid banditry threats

In response to recent threats of bandit attacks, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered heightened surveillance across major highways and vulnerable communities.
A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said the Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, local vigilance groups, and the Edo Special Security Squad have launched intensive operations along forested areas, boundary towns, and known security hotspots.
The directive followed a video circulating on social media featuring a self-proclaimed bandit claiming presence around Ekpoma and nearby communities in Edo Central Senatorial District.
Itua emphasised that security has remained a top priority since Okpebholo assumed office, with continuous strategic briefings and activation of a statewide surveillance network covering key corridors, including:Benin–Auchi Expressway, Ekpoma–Uromi Road, Ehor–Iruekpen Axis, Benin Bypass, Ewu–Irua–Ubiaja Route,vBenin–Afuze–Auchi Corridor
“These measures are aimed at early threat detection, rapid response, and sustained pressure on criminal networks,” the statement said, adding that search-and-comb missions and coordinated patrols are ongoing.
Itua also confirmed that arrests have been made and multiple leads are being pursued, with security operations continuing until the state is fully secured.
Residents were urged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid spreading unverified information.
The statement concluded that the governor is committed to using all lawful measures to ensure that criminality is eradicated and that Edo remains safe for residents, commuters, and investors.
