6 killed, dozens injured in Kogi road crash, governor pledges support to victims

Tragedy struck along the Lokoja–Okene highway on Wednesday as a bus ferrying passengers returning from the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities event at the Government House, Lokoja, crashed, claiming six lives and leaving at least thirteen others injured.
Kogi State’s Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the incident, describing it as a devastating loss for the state.
“This accident has claimed six precious lives, while thirteen others sustained injuries of varying degrees and are receiving treatment in hospitals across Kogi,” Fanwo said in a statement.
Expressing condolences, the commissioner said the government and people of Kogi are deeply affected by the tragedy.
“The loss of any Kogite is a loss for all of us. We stand in solidarity with the families and communities affected,” he added.
Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the state government to take full responsibility for the medical care of all those injured, ensuring they receive treatment until they recover fully.
Personnel have been deployed to hospitals to oversee the care of victims and provide support to their families.
“This is a state tragedy of immense proportions, and our hearts go out to the bereaved families,” Fanwo said.
He also called on residents to pray for the souls of the deceased and the swift recovery of the wounded, asking for strength and comfort for the grieving families.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the North-Central region, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety and emergency response readiness in the state.
